Exploring the Meaning of Number 9

I don’t have a particular feeling about the number 9. It’s not a milestone birthday, nor is it specially placed in the month. In fact, some cultures consider the number 9 to be unlucky. Its unfortunate sequencing before the more perfect number 10 relegates it to an afterthought.

There are positives about the 9th month of the year, September.

Special people inLeaves photo my life have birthdays during the month. It signals the beginning of fall as summer fades away. Cooling temperatures produce carpets of stunning red, gold, rust and orange leaves of autumn that flutter and fall to the ground, setting the stage for winter.

Three years ago, 9 became a number, more specifically a date, to remember.

It’s the day you told me you would be leaving.

It’s also the day you left.

The Universe, with all its beauty and magical wonder, also serves up bitter bites of reality. Whether it was karma or coincidence, you started and ended your final journey on earth on the 9th day, 14 months apart.

Not a day goes by when I don’t think of you, especially when day number 9 rolls around every month. It is a bittersweet reminder of your larger-than-life personality, your generosity, your droll sense of humor and your enduring selflessness.

To mark the second year of  your crossing over, I explored the meaning of number 9. Why not? There are bodies of work related to numerology, angel numbers and the mathematical use of number 9. There are Biblical, cultural and random references. Much to my surprise, much of what I found relates to you, my dear father.

Did you know:

  • 9 is a sacred number
  • 9 is the number of completion and fulfillment
  • 9 is a symbol of wisdom and good leadership
  • 9 is the number of heaven
  • In Hinduism 9 is the number of Brahma, the Creator

9 represents the fruits of God’s Holy Spirit, which are Faithfulness, Gentleness, Goodness, Joy, Kindness, Long suffering, Love, Peace and Self-control (Galatians 5:22 – 23).

Some of the coolest tidbits I found will appeal to the math junkies and geeks (Dad!):

  • When multiplied, 9 always reproduces itself. No other number does this.
  • The last of the cardinal numbers, the 9 is the most worldly and sophisticated of all numbers.
  • 9 offers love to the world at large and has global consciousness. Looking at the shape of the symbol, it offers sympathy and compassion to everyone and is a reservoir of giving with a generous downward spout.
  • 9 lives in the world and understands the connections between all of mankind. It is a humanitarian, and sees no real difference between its neighbor next door and the person living in a very different culture and environment on the other side of the world.
  • 9 is the least judgmental of all numbers, the most tolerant and the most conscious.

All of this describes you to a T, Dad. I am so fortunate I had you in my life for a long time. I do my best every day to model the best of you.

I miss you every day, Dad. I love you.
